‘Conscious copies’ and their functional relevance in visual working memory

We have proposed that visual working memory introspection involves the creation of a second representation next to the already existing original working memory trace.

The generation of this ‘conscious copy’ for the purpose of consciously experiencing stored visual information is essentially a form of mental imagery. To investigate whether the conscious experience of stored information has an additional functional role in retention, we assessed visual working memory performance in individuals who cannot voluntary generate mental images, a phenomenon referred to as aphantasia.
