Heleen Slagter receives ERC starting grant

22 October 2015

Project title: The mind’s eye: How expectation and attention shape perception

The brain can be seen as a prediction machine, continuously trying to predict what the world likely looks like based on past experience.

This way, our past strongly colors our perception of the world.

Slagter will examine how predictions are implemented in the brain and influence perception. Slagter here assumes an important role for the basal ganglia, a cluster of nuclei deep in the brain. In addition, she will examine if it is possible to turn off the predictive brain, and thereby the influence of past experiences, so that the world can be seen as it is, in an unbiased manner.
