Short Biography

I am a neuropsychologist who has been research active since 1983. I have been lucky enough to be part of a golden period of psychological and neuroscientific research in which neuropsychologists played a key role in the rapid advance of understanding how the brain works. My personal dream is to develop an accurate and detailed description of the human visual brain. As a species, we have allocated about one quarter of our most precious organ to the perception of the visual world. Understanding how we consciously, and subconsciously, register visual information must therefore be central to a basic understanding of the human mind. It is therefore not surprising that philosophers of the mind, like Daniel Dennett, so often refer to examples from vision science.

My research career can be characterised by three phases to date: (1) my time as part of Freda Newcombe's research group in Oxford (1983-1991); (2) a period in which I established my own research group at the University and the Teaching Hospital in Utrecht, characterised by clinical and neuropsychological research interests, graduate teaching (I set up a research masters course and supervised many PhDs), and encompassing a concerted effort to establish a higher profile for European neuropsychology on the international stage (1991-2008); and (3) a more recent period (2008-2012) where I have had a senior management role as Dean (responsible for 1600 members of staff, circa 10,000 students and with an annual budget of  €105 million) at the University of Amsterdam. This later period, in which I have personally been less research active than before, offered me a period of scientific reflection which led to a proposed new model for the understanding of pathways of visual processing, published with Alan Cowey in 2011 and which forms the basis of my current research programme.

At the start of my science career with Freda Newcombe  in Oxford, I was the first to demonstrate the existence of covert or unconscious face recognition in prosopagnosia, namely the inability to recognise faces following head injury. This discovery spawned an avalanche of studies and greatly influenced theories of cognition, particularly in the field of "knowledge without awareness". Early on, I realised the importance of studying developmental face recognition disorders in order to understand the functional architecture of visual processing. I was the first to demonstrate the familial basis of developmental prosopagnosia, thereby suggesting a genetic base for specific cognitive functions such as face recognition. My work in Oxford on mental imagery in the early nineties with Freda Newcombe sparked off a long-term research programme on visual hallucinations in psychiatric and neurological patients. This work culminated in a new theoretical model describing the neurocognitive processes involved in visual hallucinations.

In addition to face recognition, I carried out a range of studies on other face perception abilities, such recognition of facial expressions and lipreading . I have a longstanding interest in the perception of colour, and my work in this area ranges from psychophysical studies on the contribution of colour to depth perception to neuropsychological investigations of colour agnosia. Throughout my career, one important research strand concerns the fundamental debate on hierarchical versus parallel processing in vision. My work has provided strong evidence for parallel processing and against the position that basic visual cues are integrated in order to support higher-order recognition. I have shown that higher-order recognition deficits can be selective and independent of impairments in the perception of visual cues such as colour, shape or motion.

During my whole career, I have adopted a theory-driven approach. It is my conviction that scientific advancement requires clearly formulated hypotheses and rigorous experimentation. This is not easy in a clinical setting, but I have now developed a comprehensive toolbox of research methodologies including patient group studies, clinical case reports, psychophysics, reaction time experiments, ERP studies, functional magnetic resonance imaging, transcranial magnetic imaging, and direct stimulation. I have enriched the research field with new concepts, such as "covert face processing", "familial basis of face recognition", "perception-imagery imbalance model of hallucinations", "developmental colour agnosia" and "patchwork model of vision".

Apart from fundamental neuroscience, I have worked throughout my career on applied clinical neuropsychological issues. My clinical work includes topics such as early neuropsychological assessment after stroke, the cognitive sequelae of diabetes, the cognitive effects of hormonal conditions, vascular dementia, and cognitive rehabilitation.
